Calico is seeking a Senior IT
Infrastructure Engineer(Contractor) to join our IT team and help
support, modernize, and migrate our infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform
(GCP) in support of our scientists and R&D organization.
In this role, you will be
responsible for maintaining and supporting Calico’s existing on-premises
infrastructure while partnering with IT and cross-functional teams to develop
and execute a migration roadmap to GCP. You will play a critical role in ensuring
operational stability, resilient system design, and engineering excellence for
business-critical research workloads.
The successful candidate will
bring deep expertise in traditional on-premises IT infrastructure, including
physical and virtual servers, storage and file systems, Microsoft Active
Directory, DNS, and related infrastructure services. The ideal candidate will
also have strong experience with GCP cloud infrastructure, cloud IAM,
networking, and infrastructure automation.
While this role will initially
focus heavily on on-premises infrastructure, it will also help establish the
systems, processes, standards, and automation practices needed to support
Calico’s cloud adoption and long-term infrastructure modernization.
Position
Responsibilities:
●Maintain and support Calico’s on-premises
infrastructure, including HPC clusters, storage and file systems, physical and
virtual servers, Active Directory, backups, and related infrastructure
services.
●Partner with IT and cross-functional teams to define
and execute a roadmap for migrating on-premises infrastructure to GCP.
●Drive efficient and well-planned migration efforts
while minimizing disruption to R&D and scientific operations.
●Collaborate with Software Engineering, Data Science,
ML Platform, and other teams to align on GCP infrastructure best practices.
●Promote scalable, secure, and standardized cloud
infrastructure practices across teams.
●Work with Calico’s technology partners, including
Google Enterprise Network, Google Professional Services, sponsored research
partners, and Contract Research Organizations, to support business and research
needs.
●Develop and maintain clear architecture diagrams,
infrastructure standards, operational runbooks, and support documentation.
●Identify opportunities to improve automation,
infrastructure consistency, reliability, and operational efficiency.
Position
Requirements:
●Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science,
Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
●5+ years of experience in on-premises
infrastructure engineering, systems administration, or a related role.
●5+ years of experience managing cloud
infrastructure, preferably in GCP.
●Strong experience with enterprise infrastructure
platforms, including virtualization, storage, backup, and data center
operations.
●Expertise in Active Directory, Entra ID, Group
Policy, DNS, DHCP, and hybrid identity management.
●Strong hands-on experience with Windows Server
and Linux environments.
●Expertise in Google Cloud Platform, including
Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, IAM, VPC, and hybrid connectivity.
●Experience with Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE),
including cluster administration, workload management, and networking policies.
●Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code and
automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or equivalent.
●Strong scripting experience with Python, Bash,
or similar languages.
●Solid understanding of core networking concepts,
including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, routing, and troubleshooting utilities.
●Experience documenting architecture standards,
recovery procedures, and operational runbooks.
●Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks such
as NIST CSF/CIS18, SOC 2, and ISO 27001.
●Ability to partner effectively with Information
Security on hardening, compliance, vulnerability management, and incident
response.
●Strong customer-service mindset and enthusiasm
for supporting scientific software developers, data scientists, and R&D
teams.
●Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work
independently with minimal supervision. Comfortable working in ambiguous,
fast-paced, and rapidly evolving R&D environments.
●Ability to communicate complex technical
concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
●Must be willing to work onsite at least four
days per week.
Nice
to Have:
●Certifications such as Google Cloud Professional Cloud
Architect, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), or equivalent.
●Experience administering source code repositories such
as Git, GitLab, or GitHub.
●Experience with cluster file systems such as Ceph,
Lustre, or similar technologies.
●Experience supporting research, biotech, life sciences,
or scientific computing environments.
