Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced z/OS Systems Programmer to support a mission-critical government agency environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and ongoing support of IBM z/OS operating systems and related mainframe software. This role supports highly secure, high-availability systems that are essential to government operations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade IBM z/OS and associated system software
  • Perform system customization, tuning, and performance optimization
  • Apply PTFs, APARs, and system upgrades in accordance with agency change-management policies
  • Support and maintain core z/OS components such as:
  • JES2/JES3
  • SMP/E
  • TSO/ISPF
  • RACF (or equivalent security products)
  Monitor system health, diagnose issues, and perform root cause analysis
  Support disaster recovery, high availability, and business continuity initiatives
  Ensure systems comply with government security standards and audit requirements
  Collaborate with application developers, operations staff, and security teams
  Develop and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and run books
  Participate in on-call support and after-hours maintenance windows as required
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 15+ years of experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer (or equivalent mainframe role)
  • Strong hands-on experience with:
  • IBM z/OS internals and system configuration
  • SMP/E software maintenance
  • JCL, utilities, and system diagnostics
  Experience supporting mission-critical or regulated environments
  Familiarity with government IT controls, compliance, and change-management processes
  Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional technical team
  Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills
