Azure Data
Architect to do a Data Modernization and Data Cleanse.
a
comprehensive modernization of the technology platform replacing five legacy
COBOL-based systems it has operated since the early 1990s with a unified,
cloud-native platform hosted on Microsoft Azure —
A central workstream of the program is data — cleansing the legacy data and
converting it into the new platform within a fixed delivery timeline. This
person will be a technical conduit under leadership: someone who genuinely
understands the data technically, understands the implications of cleansing
decisions on the conversion process, and can help keep the work moving in the
right direction. They will work alongside existing data resources on the
program rather than managing the client relationship directly.
The role begins with a focus on data cleansing and is expected to shift toward
data conversion as the program progresses — building the data pipelines and
executing the conversion needed to migrate off the legacy environment. Expect meaningful
ramp-up time early on;. As the work matures, the role becomes more hands-on
technically, blending a few hours a day of hands-on-keyboard pipeline work with
data architecture. An interest in automation and AI is a real plus — the team
is looking to improve how the work gets done, not just execute it.
Indicative responsibility mix (will vary over the engagement):
• Hands-on technical (pipelines, architecture): ~25% early, increasing through
the conversion phase
• Ramp-up / domain & application training: ~25% in the early months
• Client interface with the NC data team: ~10–15% (interfacing, not managing
the client)
• Remainder: data cleansing/conversion analysis, architecture, and
process-improvement work
Qualifications
• 7+ years of data engineering / data architecture experience
• Hands-on Azure data stack: ADF, Databricks, Synapse
• Experience on large-scale data conversion / migration or modernization
efforts
• Strong, consultant-grade client communication skills
• Able to work on-site (Raleigh) 3–4 days/week
• Able to pass the required background check (including fingerprinting)
•
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
• Legacy
data familiarity — DB2 / mainframe-sourced data a plus (heavy recent Azure
experience can offset)
• SQL plus Python/Spark for data transformation in Databricks
• Data modeling and architecture for analytics/operational platforms
• Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) and broader Azure data ecosystem
• Development background that evolved into data engineering/analysis (strong
plus — understands data from the code side)
• Automation / AI exposure applied to data work (process improvement mindset)
• Business or administration domain background
